Witnessed and Reported EF-5 tornadoes

LEGEND:

  • This means the tornado is an EF-5 in damage rating AND the damage rating is not disputed
  • This means the tornado is rated an EF-5 in damage rating, but there is some dispute. Event may not have been an EF-5
  • This means the tornado is rated below an EF-5 in damage rating, but there is some dispute. Event may have been an EF-5

This EF-5 tornado impacted the city of Greenfield, tossing cars, dislodging slabs, and completely ripping apart the entrance to the Public Storm Shelter. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of 284 MPH. The EF-5 damage rating given to this tornado is undisputed. An overhead view of the damage is shown here:

According to witnesses, this tornado impacted the city of Greenfield, completely obliterating the tornado siren. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of over 330 MPH. The EF-5 damage rating was awarded by all survey personnel present. Unfortunately, no images of the damage are available.

This EF-5 tornado impacted the city of Greenfield (which seems to be an EF-5 magnet, wow), tossing a TIV 2, dislodging multiple slabs, completely destroying both the Public Storm Shelter and the Storm Chaser HQ, and leveling all but one home. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of 273 MPH. The EF-5 damage rating was awarded by three damage survey personnel, and among others (who didn't do a thorough examination though I still asked for their opinion) the EF-5 rating stood firm. An overhead view of the damage is shown here:

This tornado impacted the city of Newton, dislodging a couple slabs, completely leveling all homes and the police station, and tossing a few cars. While one survey personnel on-site only gave this tornado a Strong EF-4 rating, all other survey personnel gave it a Weak EF-5 rating. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of 203 MPH. Unfortunately, no images are available.

 July 24, 2016

This tornado impacted the city of Trenton, throwing two slabs, completely leveling many homes, leveling the hospital, and tossing debris about 3/4 of the distance towards Greenfield. All survey personnel on-site gave this tornado an EF-5 rating. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of up to 300 MPH. An overhead view of the damage is shown here:

 July 25, 2016

This tornado impacted the cities of Greenfield and Elwood (in that order), throwing one slab, completely leveling many homes, leveling the storm chaser HQ, and scattering debris for miles. All survey personnel on-site gave this tornado an EF-5 rating despite there being very little EF-5 damage. This tornado sustained radar-indicated wind speeds of 278 MPH. An overhead view of each city's damage is shown:

This tornado impacted the city of Newton as it was weakening. It hit peak wind speeds of 267 MPH, and hit Newton around 220-230 MPH. All but one survey personnel on-site gave this tornado an EF-5 rating, the one exception giving it a high-end EF-4 rating. An overhead view of the damage is shown:

  November 25, 2016

This tornado impacted the cities of Greenfield and Elwood, dislodging multiple slabs and leveling parts of both cities. Elwood was undoubtedly impacted more, as only three houses were affected in Greenfield as opposed to over a dozen in Elwood. This tornado sustained winds of 280 MPH.

  December 10, 2016

This tornado impacted the city of Elwood, completely wiping several slabs, tossing the slab of one house, and leveling over half of the city, in addition to tossing cars as far as the borders of Greenfield. This tornado is part of the Elwood-Greenfield 12/10/2016  outbreak, which spawned six tornadoes including this EF-5 and an EF-3. This tornado sustained windspeeds of 218 MPH, but has undoubtedly caused one of the highest amounts of EF-5 damage.

 March 5, 2017

This tornado accelerated to windspeeds of 295 MPH, completely demolishing Elwood as it reached around 240 MPH winds. I don't feel like writing much here so yay. :D (YouTube video by Alex_ander, will probably link later if I feel like it)

March 18, 2017

This tornado's maximum windspeeds are unknown, but it caused damage matching that of an estimated 200 MPH Weak EF-5. The EF-5 damage came from two dislodged slabs of weak houses.
Trenton damage

   June 7, 2017

This tornado formed just outside of Auburn, heading towards Trenton almost immediately after its formation. The tornado hit Trenton before it hit its maximum windspeed of 259 MPH. The EF-5 damage on this tornado comes from three thrown slabs of weak houses, as marked by a purple dot in the picture below. Other areas of damage are marked by their respective colored dots and colored text. It should be noted that this tornado did such catastrophic damage to the homes it went over because it was very thin (stovepipe tornado) and moved very slowly. As such, the damage survey in the trailer park area may be inaccurate because it was near impossible to tell what strength trailer home had been there beforehand and I no longer have my reference pictures.

200+ MPH Non-EF-5 tornadoes:

  • June 15, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds of 271 MPH, but stayed in open land for the duration of its life. The tornado stayed on the ground for 45 minutes.
  •  June 18, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds of 253 MPH. This tornado affected the town of Dover, and while one survey personnel gave this tornado an EF-5 damage rating, most teams disagree, giving it a strong EF-3 or weak EF-4 damage rating.
  • July 12, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds of around 290 MPH, but did not hit any towns.
  • July 13, 2016- This tornado was recorded by Justin7200 during a PathFinder Storm Chasing chase. The tornado was ranked EF-5 at first, but upon no discovery of EF-5 damage was later downgraded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWb6BcIYB4U
  • July 16, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds just above 200 MPH, affecting the town of Trenton, and while one survey team gave it an EF-5 rating, all other survey teams gave it a strong EF-4 rating.
  • July 24, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds of around 200 MPH, but did not hit any towns. This tornado is associated with the Trenton outbreak because of the close proximity to the city in which it formed.
  • August 5, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds of 218 MPH, causing EF-3 damage in both Auburn and Dover. One survey team did give this tornado an EF-5 rating, but other survey teams highly disagree.
  • August 11, 2016- This tornado hit maximum wind speeds between 240-250 MPH, but remained in the desert for its entire life cycle.
  • August 22, 2016- This tornado hit maximum windspeeds in excess of 265 MPH, but remained in the desert throughout its life cycle.
  • September 17, 2016- This tornado hit windspeeds in great excess of 200 MPH, but a maximum windspeed was never specified. This tornado remained in the desert for its entire life cycle, narrowly avoiding Dover in the process.
  •  September 19, 2016- This tornado hit windspeeds of 283 MPH, destroying Trenton in the process. However, upon investigation, most survey teams discovered zero evidence of EF-5 damage. Some witnesses claim there was EF-5 damage elsewhere in the city, but such evidence was never found. (Reported by Caleano)
  • October 4, 2016- This tornado was part of a large outbreak that occurred all over the map. This tornado hit maximum windspeeds of around 230 MPH, destroying two-thirds of Dover in the process. However, because no location in Dover can sustain EF-5 damage, this tornado was rated as a strong EF-3. (Reported by LillyTech)
  • Late October, 2016- This tornado reached maximum windspeeds of 267 MPH, mostly traveling in the southwestern portion of the desert. (Reported by the blog owner)
  • October 26, 2016- This tornado hit maximum windspeeds in excess of 220 MPH, but traveled strictly over open terrain, causing no damage.
  • Early November, 2016- This tornado reached maximum windspeeds of 367 MPH, traveling mostly just outside of Trenton, causing zero damage to the city.
  • November 8, 2016 - This tornado hit maximum windspeeds near or above 270 MPH, and eventually hit Auburn but only caused EF2/EF3 damage. (Reported by Alex_ander)
  • January 3, 2017- This tornado hit maximum windspeeds of 262 MPH, but caused little to no damage. This tornado is the first reported EF-5 of 2017. (Reported by HilariousAbar)
Feel free to comment below if there are tornadoes I have missed in this blog or if there was a recent tornado that may have been an EF-5, or sustained wind speeds of an EF-5 tornado. Please be sure to include the date (estimate if not sure), cities impacted, max wind speed, and links to any images or videos if applicable.
